OK, let´s start with some intro :-)

The Respectful Prostitute (La putain respectueuse) is a play written by a French philosopher, playwright and novelist Jean-Paul Sartre.

Firstly I will tell you something about the author because Sartre plays an important role in the history of modern philosophy. From my point of view it is always good to know some details from the life of the writer. I believe knowing the author help us to understand the book too.
Anyway, Jean-Paul Sartre was born 21 June 1905 and died 15 April 1980 in Paris. He wrote many plays, novels and stories but he is known more for his influence in the philosophy of existentialism. He was also awarded Nobel Prize in Literature in 1964 but refused it. He said that he did not want to be "institutionalised" and that such an award would limit his freedom and also limit the impact of his writing.

"Freedom is what you do with what's been done to you."
Jean-Paul Sartre

Sartre´s play The Respectful Prostitute was published in 1946, observing a prostitute in the tense period of racism in south America. The main character is the prostitute, her client and one young black man.  From what I already read I understand that the play is full of Sartre´s thoughts about rascism and social problems of contemporary world. I´m really interested how the play will work out. :-)

  3. It's one of my most favourite plays with an amazing pace and structure, and very realistic and intelligent. A must-read. Thanks for the info about Sartre's life...
